HARRISBURG – To recognize and honor local Vietnam veterans, the Lancaster County Delegation is hosting a commemorative ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon at Hempfield High School, Performing Arts Center, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.

The Lancaster County Delegation – State Sens. Ryan Aument (R-36) and Scott Martin (R-13), as well as Reps. Bryan Cutler (R-Peach Bottom), Mindy Fee (R-Manheim), Keith J. Greiner (R-Upper Leacock), Dave Hickernell (R-West Donegal), Steve Mentzer (R-Lititz), Brett Miller (R-East Hempfield) and Dave Zimmerman (R-East Earl) are inviting all veterans who have served on active duty in the United States Armed Forces between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of stationing location.

“It was with their time – and, too often, their lives – that our Vietnam veterans carried out the mission given to them. Unfortunately, for reasons well out of their control, Vietnam veterans have not always received the respect they deserve,” the delegation explained. “Personal beliefs about a war do not change the incredible dedication of our military and the sacrifices these brave men and women made on behalf of their country that must never be forgotten.”

The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act authorized the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. A special Vietnam veterans’ lapel pin has been produced and will be distributed to attending veterans.

Lancaster County native Gen. Tom Hobbins, who served in the Vietnam War and is now a retired four-star general who was commander of the United States Air Force in Europe, will be the keynote speaker. Dick Hoxworth will be the emcee; Brig. Gen. Kenneth “Ed” Brandt Sr. Army National Guard chaplain and U.S. Army deputy chief of chaplains of the Army National Guard, will serve as the chaplain; and Millersville University ROTC will post the colors.

Registration is required for the event by Friday, Sept. 22, and can be completed online at SenatorAument.com or by calling Aument’s district office at (717) 627-0036. Questions about the ceremony can also be directed to his office.
